So what should a dog owner do to keep up their pets grooming regimen? According to experts, it is recommended that for the health and welfare of your dog, that you regularly groom them at home during this pandemic.
A good idea would be to brush your dog’s coat a little more often than usual, taking care around the sensitive areas. This will help your dog’s coat stay free of mats, whilst keeping your dog used to being handled.
Bathe your dog
at least 1 each month. Too much bathing can harm their natural oils. Regular monthly bathing of your dog will make sure their coat is kept clean, however please do ensure your dog’s coat is knot-free before, as bathing without brushing could cause further matting of the coat.
If your dog has a build-up of discharge around its eyes, use a small moist cotton wool piece and carefully wipe from the corner of your dog’s eyes in a gentle downwards motion. This should remove or loosen any discharge surrounding the eye. Done daily, this can help prevent any build-up from occurring.
Wipe the inside of your dog’s ears weekly with a moist cotton ball or soft cloth. At the same time, you should take a good look and smell each ear and ear canal. Any signs of severe redness, swelling, debris, or discharge (brown or yellow), or a fetid, “yeasty” odor may be a sign of infection and requires a visit to your veterinarian.
Daily
brushing of your dog’s teeth
is best, but you should brush your dog’s teeth at least a few times per week. Plaque starts to build up after 48 hours. You can also try wrapping your finger with gauze or a washcloth. Wipe the teeth and massage the gums.
Do not use “human” beauty and hygiene products such as shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste on your dog. Many human toothpastes contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Always use veterinarian-approved hygiene products on your dog.
Remember, grooming could be used as a bonding time with your dog and don’t forget to reward them with treats when done.
